Barnsley IAM Helps to Improve Driving Standards at Woodhead

Recognising that the majority of accidents are caused by driver error, the IAM introduced the Advanced Driving Test in 1956 with the specific objective of significantly improving driving standards. The tests use the principles of advanced driving, pioneered and applied with great success by the Metropolitan Police, and are accredited by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA). All tests are taken by IAM Examiners who hold a Police Advanced Driving Certificate and have extensive experience working with Police Services throughout the UK.
The tests are not exclusively about safety, but to encourage the driver or rider to feel more confident on the road and to get greater enjoyment from the experience. The advanced driving test devised and conducted by the Institute of Advanced Motorists is recognised internationally as the hallmark of proficiency behind the wheel. More than 400,000 drivers have taken it – with a very high success rate among those who prepare properly.
Following a presentation given to the Woodhead Mountain Rescue team, they soon realised that the solution to their driver training issues may have been found. As well as providing benefits such as insurance and breakdown cover discounts, WMRT were offered special sponsorship by the Barnsley Group to help associates with the cost of joining.
